Sinkholes have become something more and more familiar to us these days. Although they can form by natural means or human-induced, the one thing they have in common is their power to cause large amounts of destruction. However, if we are alert to the signs a sinkhole is forming, it could help us and our households to stay safe. So, what are some of these indicators?
It should be mentioned, firstly, that while these indicators could be signs of a sinkhole forming, it’s possible they are indicators of something else, so its good to determine if you live in an area prone to sinkholes. Some things to watch out for are cracks starting to form in circular patterns in the ground, rapid ground subsidence, or sudden openings in the ground. You might also start to notice some more subtle warning signs. These would be water starting to pool in places that have never had this happen before, you might see plants etc. die off in some areas of your property which might indicate water is no longer reaching that area and is draining away into a sinkhole. Trees and fence posts might start leaning or parts normally under the ground could become exposed.
What about inside the home? Look for these warning indicators: cracks forming in floors and walls, doors and windows no longer closing properly. Well water looking muddy or cloudy. These could all indicate a sinkhole. If you are noticing some of these signs and are worried there may be a sinkhole forming close by, have the property checked out, after all, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
